Marlborough

I brought Winston Churchill's biography of his most famous ancestor with me to France in an effort to finally get through it.

I've managed to get most of the way through; I'm about two thirds of the way through the second volume. I'm now at the depressing part of the story when after the end of Marlborough's campaigns the British political establishment turn on him and destroy him.

Churchill does a good job of describing Marlborough's campaigns and the detailed description of the political background helps put the military campaigns into context. But I do find the thorough coverage of the politics hard going; definitely very difficult terrain, causing 1/4 movement!

Needless to say, after reading these books, I've been looking for some 1/72 Marlborough figures! Unfortunately there aren't any figures for the War of the Spanish Succession. The contemporary Great Northern War is well covered but I'm not sure how close the figures are. I guess I should buy some boxes so I can have a close look at them.

Marlborough was an ancestor of Churchill? That's interesting. The only American parallel I can think of is that Franklin Roosevelt was related to Teddy Roosevelt!

Marlborough's armies seem to have been a popular subject for the old fashioned lead soldiers of the early 20th century. I must confess that this is a part of history I know nothing about!

Dave,

Have you tried out your army yet? Which rule set did you use.

Andrew,

The campaigns of Marlborough are well worth looking at!

I've read two books now: a book years ago that only covered the military campaigns, which didn't make much sense because there was no context. And now the opposite extreme with too much non-military detail; I'm really not that interested in pages and pages of detail about the relationship between Sarah Churchill and Queen Anne. I expect there are better introductory books available!

For myself, I'm thinking of looking for a French book that describes events from the French point of view. I'll have to look on amazon.fr sometime.

We had one game using Under the Lilly Banners. I am not totally convinced, but we said we would have another go. 18th Century Principles of War is another option we might look at. Certainly no settled rule set.

Dave has been working in the Orkneys recently so we have not had a chance of another game.

By the way there was a copy of Forlorn Hope going on ebay at (currently)a reasonable price

I am away on holiday from today until the 29th
